SIGLI PROJECT
Hope 4 Our Children donated funds toward women workshop and
free clinic equipment in Sigli are to serve the tsunami victims. Programs are
conducted by YAYASAN ILHAM in Aceh, Indonesia. In addition, Hope 4 Our Children also build a dorm in Dayah Babulilmi and funded a duck farm.
1. Free Clinic Project
Hope 4 Our Children helped one free clinic at Sigli area.
Currently it provides free services for tsunami victims. It serves 40 to 60
patients daily. The clinic lacked medical equipment and essential medication,
such as penicillin, painkillers. The funds raised were distributed for the
following:
- medical equipment: thermometer,
blood pressure monitor, exam bed; and medication: which includes penicillin,
flu/cold/cough medicine, fever medicine, anti biotic,
diarrhea/gastrointestinal, medicines.
a doctor's stipend
three nurses' stipend
Hope 4 Our
Children supplied medicine for free for the clinic as well as connects the free
clinic to a local hospital.
The program was initiated in February 2006 by Faizah
Badeges, Hope 4 Our Children's Board of Trustee, when she and two volunteers (Debra Dirks
and Stephanie Parlove) visited Aceh. They identified a free clinic that lacked
equipment and supplies. Hope 4 Our Children provided funds to buy equipment and
supplies for Sigli free clinic managed by a local partner, Yayasan Ilham, one
volunteer doctor and two nurses.
During her trip to Sigli in
June 2006, Ina Nasution also visited the free clinic that provides basic health
services to its surrounding communities. With the medical supplies funded by
Hope 4 Our Children, the doctor and the two nurses were able to provide basic
medical supplies to 40-60 tsunami survivors daily. They have been providing
excellent medical services to tsunami survivors living in the nearby tsunami
camps.
2. Sigli Project - To Support
Widows' Livelihood
Hope 4 Our Children helped the existing program of PII/MSA (pelajar
IslamIndonesia/Muslim Student Association) by procuring sewing machines and
embroidery machines for the livelihood of more than
25 women victims of tsunami. Additionally, we disbursed funds for
training those women to sew and embroider to help them find jobs in embroidery
business and in the long run, to run their own business.
Moreover, Hope 4 Our Children worked together with
Yayasan Ilham in Sigli on teaching the women and men of tsunami victim how to
produce salted fish . We procured one packaging machine to pack shredded fish
for fish crackers home industry / small business. This industry generates income
to tsunami victims without the need of large capital and helps provide
their livelihood.
Hope 4 Our Children funded several workshops for tsunami
survivors.
The workshops focused
on providing on-the-job trainings and basic skills in the areas of embroidery,
sewing, swing rope production, salted fish production, hammock making and
furniture making.
The workshops range from three classes to ten classes, depending
on the complexity and target of the workshop. Funds were allocated to pay for
trainers, materials, and equipment. The workshops were managed by a community
member and volunteer, Ms. Radhiah.To
date, the workshops have trained more than 64 survivors in Sigli area.
The hammock making, furniture making, embroidery and sewing projects have
been a success.

3. Sigli Orphanage Project
Hope 4 Our
Children disbursed funds for two pesantrens (boarding school) benefiting about
1,000 children in Sigli. Furthermore, Hope 4 Our Children disbursed funds raised in April 2005 fundraiser to build a dorm for an existing orphanage in Sigli area
which housed tsunami children.
The project was initiated in
February 2006, when Faizah Badeges, Hope 4 Our Children's Board of Trustee, visited
Sigli and identified Dayah Babulilmi as a target project based on her assessment
of the Dayah and recommendation from local leaders in the area. Even though the
Dayah had influx of tsunami children, few reliefs reached the Dayah because of
the remote location of the Dayah, which is four hours from Banda Aceh.
As
a result of the visit, Hope 4 Our Children disbursed $61,998 for
Dayah Babulilmi. The fund was allocated for the construction of 12 rooms and 12
bathrooms to provide shelter for economically disadvantaged children, most of them are tsunami survivors and orphans.
Hope 4 Our Children selected Dompet Dhuafa (www.dompetdhuafa.or.id)
as the partner to monitor the progress and construction of Dayah Babulilmi dorm
project.
The
construction of the dorm started in early June 2006. The construction was
completed as scheduled in September 2006. In addition, Hope 4 Our Children
provided the new dorm with bunk beds and mattresses.
The
87 children, victim of tsunami, who came to the Dayah, now have place to stay.
They are also no longer sleep on a straw mat on top of cement floor since the
dorm are furnished with bunk beds and mattresses for them, a luxury they did not
have before.
Hope 4 Our Children collaborated with Al-Fatih Academy and raised fund to build a duck farming project in Dayah Babulilmi. The purpose of the "Dollar for Duck" project is three folds. First, the farm supplies egg as a source of nutrition for the children. Second, additional income generated from the farm helps the Dayah becomes a self-sustained institution. Third and final purpose is increased children's livelihood skill as they now have "hands on experience" in maintenance of the duck farm.
