Jogjakarta Temporary housing project
Hope 4 Our Children’s representative, Ina
Nasution, also visited Jogjakarta, the place hit by May 2006 earthquake that
claimed more than 5000 lives. Before leaving for Jogjakarta, Hope 4 Our Children
representative received donation earmarked for Jogjakarta earthquake victims.
Based on the recommendation from Dompet Dhuafa,
Hope 4 Our Children’s local partner,
based on their assessment on the field, the funds received from the donors
were used to build temporary houses for the earthquake victims.
The cost of construction of
each temporary house is about Rp 1.2 million or about $145 for a house with size
of 4 meters X 5 meters. The temporary house is placed in front of their
destroyed houses. The reason for the location is so that while the survivors are
working toward building their permanent house, which may take several months or
years, depending on their financial resources, the survivors will have a place
to live that provides them with more privacy than a refugee camp.
The other benefit of the
project is that the houses were built by local carpenters, employing earthquake
survivors who have relevant skills. Dompet Dhuafa provides expertise on the
construction and design of the houses.
Next
Steps:
The construction of 15
temporary houses were completed successfully. However, there are families who
still live in the ruins of their houses. Funds will be needed to build
additional temporary housing for these families.
